Lucy finishes her visit, feeling proud. She helped her person and taught the children important lessons. The children clap, but from a distance, showing they understand and respect Lucy's work.
My tail gave a little thump against Sarina’s leg. Thump-thump. It was the sound of anticipation, the soundtrack to a mission about to be accomplished. Today was the day. The day I, Lucy, the bravest of black mix breeds, would stride into the bustling heart of a school and impart my wisdom. My job was crucial, and my heart swelled with the importance of it all. Sarina, my partner, my human, my guide, gave my leash a gentle squeeze. "Ready, girl?" she whispered, her voice a warm rumble that always settled my nerves. Ready? I was born ready.
The school doors swung open, and a tidal wave of noise and energy washed over me. Little humans, a blur of bright colors and excited chatter, swarmed in every direction. My ears twitched, taking it all in. This was my classroom today, and these were my students. Sarina’s hand rested on my harness, a silent anchor in the sea of activity. "Remember, Lucy," she’d said before we left, her eyes serious, "your focus is key. No distractions." I nodded, a subtle dip of my head, though I knew she understood my commitment. My secret wish to chase a rogue butterfly or greet a friendly squirrel was tucked away, deep inside. Duty called, and Lucy answered.
We entered the main hall, and the children’s eyes, like a hundred little spotlights, found me. Gasps rippled through the crowd. "It's the dog!" "She's so pretty!" "Can I pet her?" The questions bounced off the walls, a cacophony of pure, unadulterated curiosity. It was a familiar sound, but today, it was a challenge. My mission wasn't just to be seen, but to be understood. And understanding, I knew, required a certain kind of quiet respect.
