Twelve years. A desert stretching out before me, barren and unforgiving. Then, a mirage, shimmering on the horizon, beckoning me closer with promises of an oasis. He arrived like a whisper on the wind, a gentle breeze after a relentless storm. His eyes, the color of a summer sky, held no judgment, only a soft, unwavering warmth. He saw past the whispers, past the walls built by fear and misunderstanding. He saw me.

"You're tired," he’d said, his voice a balm to my frayed nerves. We were huddled in the shell of a car, the rain drumming a mournful rhythm on the tin roof. My belly swelled, a constant reminder of the precariousness of our existence, of the life I was desperately trying to shield. He reached out, his hand calloused but his touch feather-light, and traced the curve of my stomach. "But you're strong. We're strong."

He had a way of making the impossible seem… manageable. He spoke of possibilities, of futures where rent was paid on time, where the gnawing emptiness in our stomachs was a distant memory. He had his own ghosts, I knew. A past he rarely spoke of, a quiet sadness that sometimes flickered in his eyes. But he never let it dim the light he shone on me. He was a steady hand in my turbulent world, a constant anchor when the waves threatened to pull me under.
