The air in Oakhaven still shimmered. Not in a romantic, starlight kind of way, but in a “someone accidentally shook a disco ball filled with fairy dust and regret” sort of way. Everywhere Elara looked, a tell-tale glint caught the light: on the impeccably trimmed hedges of Mrs. Higgins’ prize-winning petunias, in the very depths of Mayor Grumbleson’s famously stern scowl (which, to be fair, had always had a certain… *sparkle* of disapproval), and even, Elara suspected with a shudder, clinging to the whiskers of her own bewildered cat, Bartholomew.

Her bakery, “Elara’s Edible Escapades,” was a glittering monument to her own brand of chaos. The normally comforting scent of sugar and yeast was now overlaid with a faint, metallic tang that Elara had come to associate with impending doom and excessively festive craft projects. The sourdough starter, once a venerable institution passed down through generations, now pulsed with an internal, incandescent glow, a tiny, bubbling supernova in its ceramic crock. It was a constant, shimmering reminder of her monumental screw-up.

“Are you quite finished contemplating Bartholomew's potential for catastrophic sparkle?” Mayor Grumbleson’s voice, a gravelly rumble that usually signaled the beginning of Elara’s impending doom, cut through her reverie. He stood in the doorway of her bakery, his arms crossed, his face a mask of barely contained fury. His own lapels bore a faint dusting of iridescent blue, a fact he seemed determined to ignore.
