Mayor Grumbleson stood, arms rigidly at his sides, surveying the scene. The last vestiges of glitter, like reluctant confetti after a particularly rowdy party, clung to the cobblestones. Elara, her apron dusted with a faint, iridescent sheen, beamed. The giant, edible disco ball cake, a shimmering monolith of sugar and pure, unadulterated genius, stood proudly at the town square’s center, its internal mechanisms humming with contained, formerly explosive, sourdough starter. The air, once thick with the metallic tang of volatile glitter and the acrid scent of mayoral fury, now smelled faintly of vanilla and victory.
A collective sigh of relief rippled through the assembled townsfolk. Children, who had initially delighted in the unexpected sparkle, were now eyeing their glitter-encrusted parents with a mixture of amusement and mild concern. The local news crews, who had been poised for a story of urban blight and mayoral meltdown, were now scrambling to capture the triumphant, albeit slightly sticky, resolution.
Mayor Grumbleson cleared his throat, a sound that usually preceded a stern lecture on civic responsibility and the proper disposal of rogue sprinkles. Elara braced herself.
