Amelia traced the delicate curve of the rose petal with her fingertip, a stark contrast to the sharp angles of the blueprints spread across the table. Outside the café window, the city hummed with its usual, predictable rhythm, a symphony of honking horns and distant sirens. Inside, however, a different kind of music was playing – the gentle clinking of ceramic cups, the murmur of conversations, and, beneath it all, the quiet thrum of a heart that had, against all architectural logic, decided to deviate from the plan.

Liam was late, of course. Amelia had known he would be. Her internal clock, usually as precise as a surveyor’s transit, had factored in a buffer of at least fifteen minutes for “Liam Time.” She didn’t resent it anymore. The annoyance had softened, worn down by the sheer, undeniable charm of his tardiness, which often arrived with a breathless apology, a disheveled lock of hair, and sometimes, a small, wilting flower he’d apparently rescued from a pavement crack.

Today, he arrived with a potted seedling, its tiny leaves unfurling like miniature emerald flags. “Sorry, sorry, sorry!” he boomed, sliding into the chair opposite her, his usual whirlwind of energy disrupting the café’s placid atmosphere. “This little guy was about to be composted. Couldn’t let that happen, could I?”
