Brenda surveyed the scene with the air of a seasoned general inspecting a battlefield after a particularly brutal skirmish. Scattered across her living room floor were the remnants of Gary’s latest matchmaking offensive: a wilting bouquet of suspiciously vibrant plastic flowers, a half-eaten box of chocolates with only the questionable cherry-liqueur-filled ones remaining, and a single, forlorn sock that had somehow been liberated from Gary’s laundry basket during one of his more vigorous attempts to “jazz up” her presence on a dating app. The sock, Brenda mused, was probably the most committed suitor she’d had in weeks.

“Honestly, Gary,” she sighed, nudging the sock with her toe. “Are you sure Mildred didn’t leave me the inheritance just to fund your… experimental dating strategies?”
