The walls were torn down.
The air between them crackled, charged with the unspoken words that had finally tumbled out. Ryan’s confession, raw and unfiltered, hung in the space where their usual playful banter used to reside. Vivian, caught off guard, felt a tremor run through her. The walls, the carefully constructed barriers of teasing and feigned indifference, had been summarily torn down. She looked at Ryan, really looked at him, and saw not the ‘bad boy’ or the ‘troublemaker,’ but a young man whose eyes held a vulnerability she’d only glimpsed before. His usual swagger was gone, replaced by a hesitant hope that made his gaze achingly earnest.
A slow smile bloomed on Vivian’s lips, a quiet rebellion against the confusion that had clouded her mind just moments ago. She reached out, her fingers brushing against the back of his hand. The contact sent a jolt through him, and he flinched slightly, as if unsure of this new intimacy. “Ryan,” she began, her voice soft, a stark contrast to the usual sharp retorts he’d come to expect. “You think I haven’t noticed?”
His brow furrowed. “Noticed what?”
