The air in the empty classroom crackled with unspoken tension. The late afternoon sun, slanting through the dusty windows, painted long, golden stripes across the linoleum floor, illuminating the motes dancing in the stillness. Vivian sat at her desk, meticulously erasing a stray mark from her notebook, her brow furrowed in a way that always made Ryan’s chest ache. He stood by the door, leaning against the frame, his usual swagger replaced by a nervous stillness. The usual easy banter, the playful jabs, felt impossible tonight. Marcus’s words, insidious and sharp, had lodged themselves between them like burrs, and the easy camaraderie they’d been building had fractured.

He watched her, the way her dark hair fell forward, obscuring her profile. He’d spent weeks, months, perfecting the art of annoyance, of pushing her buttons just enough to elicit that flash of fire in her eyes, that sharp retort that always made him grin internally. But lately, that fire had been replaced by a hesitant uncertainty, a shadow of doubt that twisted his gut. He’d seen her talking to Marcus, seen the way Marcus’s hand had rested a little too long on her arm, and a primal possessiveness, something far uglier than his usual teasing, had surged through him.

Finally, he pushed off the doorframe, the sound echoing in the quiet room. Vivian’s head snapped up, her eyes, wide and a little startled, met his. For a moment, he saw the question there, the lingering echo of Marcus’s whispers.
