Whispers and Doubts

The fluorescent lights of Northwood High hummed with their usual monotonous drone, a sound that usually faded into the background of Ryan’s consciousness. Today, however, it felt amplified, a grating soundtrack to the gnawing unease in his gut. He leaned against the lockers, the cool metal a stark contrast to the heat prickling his skin. Vivian was supposed to be here, heading towards him with that familiar blend of exasperation and something that might, just might, be a flicker of amusement. But the hallway was emptying, the last stragglers of the afternoon rush dissolving into the corridors.

He’d spent the last two days walking on eggshells, or at least, the high school equivalent of them. After the disastrous group project meeting, where his protective instincts had flared with an intensity that still surprised him, things had felt… different. Vivian hadn’t immediately shot him down with a sharp retort. Instead, she’d looked at him, really looked at him, with an expression that had made his stomach do a complicated flip. And then, just as he’d felt a fragile bridge forming between them, Marcus had sauntered into view.

Marcus. The name itself tasted like ash in Ryan’s mouth. He was the kind of guy who moved through the school like he owned it, all easy smiles and practiced charm, a stark opposite to Ryan’s own rougher edges. Ryan had always seen him as a slick predator, someone who knew exactly how to play the game. And lately, Marcus had been playing it with Vivian.
