The air in our bedroom, once thick with the scent of lavender and the comfortable hum of shared breaths, had thinned, growing brittle and sharp. It had been a long time coming, I knew, this quiet erosion of ease. The whirlwind, so exhilarating at its inception, had settled into a routine, a comfortable rhythm, but somewhere along the way, the music had started to falter. It wasn’t a sudden crash, more of a slow, insidious drift, like two ships sailing side-by-side, their captains too preoccupied to notice the widening gap between them.

That night, the silence was a palpable thing, a heavy blanket woven from unspoken words and suppressed anxieties. I lay beside him, the familiar warmth of his body a mere physical presence, the magnetic pull that had once drawn us together like iron filings to a lodestone now strangely muted. My heart ached with a dull, persistent throb. Four children, a bustling household, a life built brick by painstaking brick – it was everything I’d ever dreamed of, and yet, a hollow space had begun to echo within me, a quiet question mark hanging over the very foundation of our happiness.

He stirred beside me, a sigh escaping his lips. It wasn’t a sigh of contentment, but one of weariness. I turned my head, my gaze falling on his profile in the dim light filtering through the curtains. His brow was furrowed, his lips set in a line that spoke of a burden carried alone. A pang of guilt shot through me. Had I let him carry it alone? Had I, in my own quiet anxieties, become a spectator to our shared journey?
