Chapter 15
The Comfort of Routine
A new, comfortable routine emerges, one that balances family life with dedicated time for Milano and Kiara. The house feels more harmonious.
The hum of the dishwasher was a familiar lullaby now, a gentle counterpoint to the soft murmur of the television in the living room where Miliana and Kiana were engrossed in a cartoon. It had been weeks since the girls had moved into their new, shared bedroom, and a surprising sense of peace had settled over our home. The initial awkwardness, the slight hesitations as they adjusted to their own designated space, had melted away, replaced by a comfortable rhythm. And for Milano and me, it felt as though a breath of fresh air had been released into the very walls of our house.
It wasn’t just about the physical space, though that was a significant part of it. Having our daughters in their own room, with their own doors to close, had subtly shifted the dynamic. It was as if their growing independence had created a ripple effect, allowing us, their parents, to reclaim a small corner of our own lives, a space for us. The quiet evenings, once filled with the constant demands of bedtime stories and last-minute requests for water, now often found us lingering in the kitchen, sharing a glass of wine, or simply sitting together on the sofa, our hands finding each other’s with an ease that had been missing for too long.
Milano had been instrumental in this transition, his quiet strength a constant support. He’d surprised me one Saturday morning with a small, beautifully crafted wooden box, intricately carved with swirling patterns that reminded me of the ocean. "For your little treasures," he'd said, his eyes crinkling at the corners. It sat on my bedside table, filled with trinkets that held sentimental value – a smooth, grey stone from our first beach vacation, a delicate seashell, a tiny silver locket Milano had given me when we were first dating. It was a small gesture, but it felt like a profound acknowledgement of my own needs, a reminder that I was more than just a mother.
