The hum of the house had shifted, a subtle recalibration that only became apparent when you stopped to listen. It wasn’t a loud change, not a dramatic upheaval, but more like the gentle turning of a key in a lock, securing something precious. Miliana, with her quiet intensity, was the first to notice. She’d always been the observer, the one who absorbed the world around her with wide, thoughtful eyes. Kiana, her twin, was already flitting about, her energy a bright, constant spark, but Miliana’s gaze often lingered, dissecting the nuances of their shared existence.

Lately, her parents, Milano and Kiara, had been… different. Not less loving, oh no, never that. Their affection for their daughters was a constant, unwavering sun. But there was a new quietness between them, a comfortable stillness that settled over their evenings after the girls were tucked into their brand-new, shared beds. Miliana remembered the days before, when her parents’ laughter would often spill into the hallway, their voices a lively duet. Now, their conversations were softer, more intimate, often punctuated by long, companionable silences.

She’d noticed it first in the dining room, during their family dinners. Before, Milano and Kiara would often be discussing the girls’ latest school triumphs or their own busy days, their focus entirely outward. Now, their eyes would meet across the table, a silent exchange passing between them that Miliana couldn't quite decipher, but which radiated a warmth that seemed to fill the room. Sometimes, Milano would reach out and gently cover Kiara’s hand with his, his thumb stroking the back of her skin in a gesture so tender it made Miliana’s own chest feel a little tight.
