Miya’s fingers danced across the keypad, each tap a tiny tremor of anxiety. The cool glow of her phone screen illuminated her face in the dim light of her Bangkok apartment, casting long, dancing shadows that mirrored the unease churning in her stomach. Kiara was gone. Gone, and with her, a piece of Miya’s own heart. She’d done all she could, every whispered word of encouragement, every carefully planned diversion, every last ruby – a pathetic sum, really, for a life that had been so brutally and systematically chipped away. Yet, even with the knowledge that Kiara was on a plane, hurtling towards an unknown horizon, the gnawing fear persisted. Their grandmother, that ancient, venomous spider, would not rest. She never rested.

Her thumb hovered over Heron’s name. He was the anchor in their turbulent family sea, the steady hand that had always been there, a silent bulwark against the storm. He would understand. He would *feel* this same oppressive weight of worry. Finally, she pressed call. The ringing tone seemed to echo the frantic beat of her pulse.

“Miya?” Heron’s voice, usually so calm and measured, carried a hint of weariness. He was in Rome, a world away, but his concern for Kiara was a tangible thing, a thread that bound them all.
