The humid air of Bangkok clung to Miya and Heron like a second skin, a familiar discomfort that masked the true tempest brewing within. They sat in a dimly lit noodle shop, the scent of chili and star anise doing little to settle their nerves. Outside, the city thrummed with a life that felt a million miles away from the suffocating control of their grandmother. Kiara was safe, for now, a fragile peace they had orchestrated with a calculated gamble.
“Are you sure about this, Heron?” Miya’s voice was barely a whisper, her fingers tracing the condensation on her glass of iced tea. The weight of their deception pressed down on her, a constant, gnawing anxiety.
Heron stirred his broth, his gaze steady and resolute. “It’s the only way. Grandmother knows Kiara is gone. She’ll have her people scouring every port, every flight manifest. We need to give her a false trail, a dead end.”
