The air in the sprawling penthouse suite of the Valentine residence was thick with the scent of expensive cigars and the even more intoxicating aroma of freshly brewed espresso. Sunlight, softened by sheer, floor-to-ceiling curtains, cast a warm, golden glow across the polished marble floors and the plush, cream-colored furnishings. Milano Valentine, heir to a name that commanded respect and fear in equal measure, sat in an armchair that seemed custom-made for him, his dark eyes thoughtful as he watched his grandmother, Senarita.

Senarita Valentine was a woman sculpted by time and elegance. Her silver hair was swept into a sophisticated chignon, and her eyes, the same deep blue as Milano’s, sparkled with a lively intelligence that belied her years. She was currently engaged in the delicate art of arranging a bouquet of crimson roses, her movements precise and graceful. A faint smile played on her lips, a smile that always seemed to hold a hint of melancholy.

“Milano, my dear,” she began, her voice a melodic murmur, “your father was just telling me about the new trade routes. Fascinating, truly. But,” she paused, her gaze lifting to meet his, “it’s not business I wish to discuss this morning.”
