The clatter of ceramic mugs and the low hum of a hundred conversations had always been Arthur Pumble’s personal symphony of chaos. Tonight, however, it was punctuated by a single, blindingly bright note: Beatrice Meadowsweet. She was across the room, a beacon of calm in a sea of flailing elbows and questionable fashion choices. Art felt it then, a seismic shift in his internal landscape, a feeling so profound it threatened to dislodge his very spleen. Love, or at least a very loud, very enthusiastic crush, had struck him square in the sternum.

His best friend, Barnaby, nudged him, a smirk playing on his lips. "Lost in the sauce again, Art? Or have you finally spotted someone who can tolerate your… unique brand of charm?"

Art ignored him, his gaze locked on Beatrice. She was laughing at something a friend said, a genuine, unrestrained sound that made Art’s knees feel like overcooked spaghetti. He had to talk to her. He *had* to. The problem, as always, was the 'how'. His brain, a notoriously unreliable narrator of social situations, immediately began churning out worst-case scenarios. He’d trip. He’d spill something. He’d accidentally insult her. He’d probably spontaneously combust.
