Chapter 6
A Coffee Catastrophe
Another attempt to impress Beatrice at a cafe. The overenthusiastic barista and Arthur's own nerves conspire. More spilled drinks, a latte art disaster, but Beatrice is there, a steady smile.
Arthur Pumble had a theory. It wasn't a scientific theory, mind you, nor was it a particularly well-researched one. It was more of a… feeling. A desperate, flailing, hope-laced feeling that claimed if he just *tried hard enough*, he could, against all odds, achieve a modicum of grace. This theory, however, had a rather unfortunate tendency to unravel the moment he stepped outside his own front door, particularly when Beatrice Meadowsweet was within a fifty-foot radius.
Today, Arthur's theory was attempting a daring expedition into the hallowed grounds of "The Daily Grind," a coffee shop renowned for its artisanal brews and its equally artisanal level of ambient noise. Arthur had seen Beatrice there a week prior, a vision of calm amidst the clatter, and had, naturally, decided this was the prime location for his next grand attempt at normalcy. He’d rehearsed his order a dozen times in his head: "One large black coffee, please." Simple. Unfussy. Completely within the realm of Arthur Pumble-ish possibility.
He took a deep breath, the scent of roasted beans and warm pastries filling his lungs. Across the room, near a window bathed in sunlight, sat Beatrice, engrossed in a book. Her brow was furrowed in concentration, a tiny smile playing on her lips. Arthur’s heart did its usual frantic tango against his ribs. This was it. Operation: Smooth Operator, Phase Two.
