The sterile scent of antiseptic clung to the air, a stark contrast to the dusty aroma of dried paint and turpentine that Eleanor vaguely recalled from a life long past. She sat on the edge of a plush, impersonal sofa, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. Across from her, Dr. Evelyn Reed offered a small, knowing smile. It wasn’t the condescending smile of Arthur, nor the pitying glance of those who saw only Eleanor Vance, the quiet, almost invisible wife. This smile held a quiet strength, a recognition that Eleanor couldn’t quite decipher, but which settled a fraction of the unease in her chest.
“Thank you for seeing me, Doctor,” Eleanor began, her voice a reedy whisper, accustomed to being swallowed by silence. She felt a tremor in her hands, a betraying sign of the turmoil beneath the placid surface Arthur insisted upon.
Dr. Reed nodded, her gaze steady and kind. “Eleanor, please. It’s good to be here. What brings you to my office today?”
