Chapter 6
The Serpent's Coil
A moment of profound betrayal or devastating loss shatters Zion's burgeoning sense of belonging. The foundations of his trust crumble, leaving him questioning everything he thought he knew and the very nature of his journey.
The air in the hidden grove, usually alive with the chirping of unseen insects and the gentle rustle of leaves, now hung heavy and still, thick with an unspoken dread. Elara’s words, spoken with a sorrow that mirrored the desolate landscape of his heart, replayed in his mind like a broken melody. “He was one of us, Zion. Or so we believed.”
Betrayal. The word tasted like ash on his tongue, a bitter counterpoint to the sweet camaraderie that had blossomed between him and Kael. The intel they had so painstakingly gathered, the knowledge that could have tipped the scales against the Shadow Weaver’s insidious influence, had been handed over. Not to the Weaver directly, that would have been too obvious, too easily detected. No, Kael had been clever, a serpent coiling in the grass, passing it to a pawn, a seemingly innocuous merchant who then fed it to the Weaver’s tendrils.
