Smiles All Around!

Lily bounced on the balls of her feet, her eyes wide with anticipation. The afternoon sun streamed through the kitchen window, illuminating the flour dusting Mom’s apron and the shiny, red apple on the counter. “Mom, can I help bake cookies?” she asked, her voice a little too loud, a little too fast. Mom smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. “Of course, sweetie! But remember what we talked about?” Lily’s brow furrowed for a split second, a tiny cloud passing over her sunny disposition. Then, her face brightened. “Oh! Yes! Mom, *please* can I help bake cookies?”

Mom’s smile widened. “That’s my girl! You certainly can. Grab your apron!” Lily’s heart did a little happy flip. It felt so good to ask so nicely. As she tied her little blue apron, she remembered the promise she’d made to herself. Today was a ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ day. And it was starting off with a delicious baking adventure.

She carefully washed her hands, the warm water and bubbly soap tickling her fingers. When Mom handed her a mixing bowl and a wooden spoon, Lily remembered again. “*Thank you*, Mom!” she chirped, her voice full of genuine appreciation. Mom winked. “You’re most welcome, Lily-bug. Now, let’s get these cookies made!”
