Lily’s eyes sparkled like two little blueberries as she spotted the bright red box on the kitchen counter. It was her birthday, and this box… this box was extra special. She knew it! Her fingers wiggled with anticipation. Dad was just about to tell a funny story about a squirrel who wore tiny boots. He was in the middle of his punchline, his voice wobbling with pretend squirrel squeaks, when Lily’s excitement bubbled over.

“Is it a pony, Daddy? Or a real princess castle?” she blurted out, bouncing on the balls of her feet. She couldn’t wait another second. The squirrel story, while usually hilarious, faded into the background of her mind. All she could think about was what might be inside that magnificent red box.

Dad paused, his squirrel voice ceasing mid-squeak. He looked at Lily, a gentle smile on his face, but a little bit of the story’s magic seemed to have flown away. “Well, sweetie,” he said, his voice returning to its normal, warm tone, “let’s finish this story, and then we can open the presents, okay?”

Lily’s shoulders drooped just a tiny bit. She wanted to open the box *now*. She really, really did. She’d forgotten all about the squirrel. It was a little bit disappointing. She shuffled her feet, her gaze fixed on the red box.

Later that afternoon, after a delightful birthday party filled with giggles and games, Lily was helping Mom tidy up. Her tummy rumbled. It was snack time, and Lily had spotted the most delicious-looking chocolate chip cookie on a plate on the counter. It was perfectly round, with melty chocolate chips peeking out.

“Mommy, cookie!” Lily announced, reaching for it.

Mom looked up from stacking plates. “Oh, Lily-bug, I’m so glad you’re helping! That cookie looks yummy, doesn’t it?”

Lily nodded eagerly, her hand hovering over the cookie. She was so ready to taste its deliciousness.

Mom gently placed her hand on Lily’s. “What do we say when we want something, sweetie?” she asked softly, her eyes kind and patient.

Lily blinked. She’d been so focused on the cookie, on how good it would taste, that the words had completely slipped her mind. She looked at the cookie, then at Mom’s smiling face. She knew she was supposed to say something.

“Um… cookie?” she tried, her voice a little uncertain.

Mom’s smile didn’t waver, but a thoughtful look crossed her face. “That’s a start, honey,” she said. “But there’s a special word that makes asking even nicer. Do you remember?”

Lily wracked her brain. She remembered asking for things before. Sometimes she said it, sometimes she didn’t. It depended on how excited she was. And this cookie was very exciting. It was the most exciting cookie she had ever seen. But Mom looked like she was waiting for a different answer. A little bit of confusion fluttered in Lily’s chest. Why was it so hard to get the cookie? She just wanted to eat it!

Finally, after a moment of quiet thought, Lily remembered. “Please?” she whispered.

“Yes! Thank you, Lily,” Mom said, her smile widening. She handed Lily the cookie, and it was even more delicious than she had imagined. But even as she savored the sweet, chocolatey goodness, a tiny seed of bewilderment had been planted. Why had it been so tricky to get the cookie? And why had Dad stopped telling his funny story? It was all a little bit puzzling. She had wanted the cookie, and she had gotten it, but something felt… off. She didn’t quite understand why.
