Chapter 4
Breathing Big and Free
Lily learns to help her lungs 'fly'. She takes deep breaths, imagining her lungs expanding. Her itchy cage disappears, replaced by the joy of breathing freely.
The world had always felt a little too small for Lily, a feeling that began not in her eyes or her feet, but deep within her chest. It was a constant, bewildering pressure, an itch that no amount of scratching could reach, as if an invisible, prickly cage had been built around her lungs. Sometimes, it was a gentle squeeze, a whisper of discomfort. Other times, it was a vise, tightening and constricting, turning each breath into a desperate, gasping quest for air, like trying to sip from a straw that had been cruelly pinched shut.
Dr. Sharma, with her kind eyes and perpetually furrowed brow, had tried everything. She’d listened with her stethoscope, a cool disc pressed against Lily’s small back, her face a mask of concentration. She’d peered into Lily’s throat, tapped her chest, and ordered mountains of tests. Yet, the mystery of Lily’s breathing remained. “It’s… unusual, Lily-bug,” Dr. Sharma would say, her voice a gentle hum of concern. “Your lungs are strong, but they seem to have a mind of their own.”
Grandma Elara, with her hands that smelled faintly of lavender and old paper, would often hold Lily close. “Some things, little sparrow,” she’d murmur, her voice like the rustle of autumn leaves, “are not meant to be understood by just looking. They are felt. They are lived.” Grandma Elara told stories, not of dragons or knights, but of the wind that could carry seeds across oceans, of birds whose hearts beat with a rhythm so strong they could soar for days. Lily loved these stories, but they always left her with a little ache, a longing for a strength she couldn’t quite grasp.
