The worn leather of my armchair creaked a familiar protest as I sank into it, the late afternoon sun casting long, distorted shadows across my living room. The air, usually alive with the comforting scent of old paper and ink, felt heavy, thick with unspoken anxieties. Jaya sat opposite me, her bright eyes, usually dancing with laughter, clouded with a concern that mirrored my own churning stomach. We’d been friends since we were small enough to build forts out of blankets and whisper secrets into the dark, and in all those years, I’d never seen her look quite like this.
“You’re not sleeping, are you, Lil?” she asked softly, her voice a gentle current against the rising tide of my unease. She reached out, her fingers brushing mine on the armrest, a silent anchor.
I shook my head, a small, weary motion. “Not really. It’s… it’s this case. And Alex.” The name tasted strange on my tongue, a mix of honey and something sharp, metallic. It was a confession, a truth I’d been trying to outrun, and now, with Jaya’s steady gaze upon me, it felt more real than ever.
