Chapter 16
The Choice of Tomorrow
Lilly must make an impossible decision: protect Alex and become complicit, or expose him and face the devastating consequences.
The air in my small apartment hung thick and heavy, a suffocating blanket woven from fear and the ghost of jasmine. Alex’s scent, usually a comforting balm, now felt like a venomous perfume, clinging to the worn velvet of the armchair, whispering promises of a future that could never be. The photograph of my mother, her smile a bright, painful beacon on the mantelpiece, seemed to watch me, her eyes filled with a sorrow I had only just begun to understand. Her eyes, and the chilling certainty that Alex, the man who held my heart captive, was the one who had stolen her light.
My fingers traced the cool, smooth surface of the silver locket she’d always worn. Inside, a faded image of a younger, vibrant her. I knew the face behind the disappearances, the monster that had lurked in the shadows, the man who had held my hand and whispered sweet nothings while her mother’s blood still stained his hands.
Detective Miller. His name echoed in my mind, a persistent drumbeat of duty. He was so close, so close to the truth. His sharp gaze, the way he’d pieced together fragments of evidence that had eluded everyone else. He would find Alex. He would bring him to justice. But justice for whom? For my mother? For the others? Or for the broken, foolish girl who had fallen so desperately in love with the architect of her deepest pain?
