The world tilted, spinning on an axis of ice and fire. Alex. My Alex. The man who made my heart sing with a melody I’d never known, the man whose eyes held galaxies, was… him. The phantom. The shadow that had haunted Willow Creek for years, the whisper that had stolen my mother. The words felt like shards of glass in my throat, refusing to be spoken, refusing to be believed. I sat across from him in the dim glow of the cafe, the scent of stale coffee and sweet pastries suddenly suffocating. His smile, the one that had melted my resolve a hundred times, was still there, innocent, almost childlike, as he reached for my hand.

"You've been quiet, Lilly," he murmured, his thumb tracing circles on my skin. "Is something wrong?"

Wrong? The word was a cosmic joke. Everything was wrong. The foundation of my reality had crumbled, leaving me standing on the precipice of an abyss. I wanted to scream, to claw at him, to demand an explanation that would somehow rewind time, erase the horrifying certainty that had settled in my gut. But my body refused to betray him. It was still warm from his touch, still thrumming with a love I now knew was laced with poison.
