Chapter 9
Spatial Discord
Zero's existential crisis unlocks the second Demon Gate.
The cave air, thick with the scent of damp earth and the metallic tang of fear, snapped with a sudden violence. Eden, a blur of righteous fury, had launched her attack while Zero still wrestled with the remnants of sleep, her blade a silver whisper aimed at his unguarded throat. But the cave was deeper than she’d anticipated, a shadowed maw where Four, curled into a tighter ball than usual, had found a refuge from the flickering torchlight. The boy, his small body thrumming with a nascent power that even he didn’t fully understand, stirred. A yelp, barely audible, and then a small, desperate shove.
Eden’s strike, honed and precise, met not the yielding flesh of a demon prince, but the surprisingly solid resistance of a child’s outstretched arm. The clang of steel on bone echoed, a jarring punctuation to the night’s stillness. Zero’s eyes snapped open, the crimson depths flaring with a primal alarm. The training, the years of discipline etched into his very being, warred with the raw terror that threatened to consume him. Eden, momentarily stunned by the unexpected obstruction, faltered.
That hesitation was all Zero needed. The cave seemed to exhale with him, a gust of wind that wasn’t merely air but something far more potent, something that carried the chill of the void. It swept through the cavern, a contained tempest that rustled the straw bedding and sent loose pebbles skittering. The figures that had lurked in the shadows, the supposed UNIT soldiers Eden had brought with her, recoiled, their carefully constructed bravado dissolving like mist. They stumbled, their movements jerky and uncoordinated, as if the very ground beneath them had turned to quicksand. Zero, fueled by a desperate need to protect the boy who had inadvertently saved him, moved with a speed that defied comprehension. He was a phantom, a whisper of darkness, weaving through the disoriented soldiers. There was no killing, no agonizing screams, only a series of soft thuds as each man was rendered unconscious, their bodies collapsing like discarded puppets.
