Chapter 7
Follow The Trail
Princess Eden, armed with the 'Bloodhound' ability to track anyone's past movements, begins her relentless pursuit of Zero. .
Princess Eden’s grip tightened on the reins, the leather creaking a familiar protest against her knuckles. The wind whipped strands of her hair across her face, a cool caress that did little to quell the heat of her resolve. Bloodhound. The whispers of its power had reached her ears weeks ago, a desperate plea from the military police, a last resort in their futile attempts to corner the demon prince. Now, it was hers. A faint, ethereal glow pulsed from the amulet at her throat, a beacon guiding her through the dense, whispering forest. It didn't show her where Zero *was*, but where he *had been*. A trail of ghostly footprints, invisible to any other eye, marked his passage, leading her deeper into the kingdom’s wilder heart.
The first stop was a roadside tavern, its patrons a motley collection of rough-looking men. Eden’s heart quickened. The slave traders. She remembered the reports, the whispers of a Black-haired boy who’d intervened. Disguised in a simple cloak, she mingled with the patrons, her presence a subtle ripple in the tavern’s rough currents. The traders, now shackled and awaiting transport, were sullen, their bravado deflated. As a guard questioned them, one of them, a burly man with a scarred face, grumbled, "He just… appeared. Didn't hurt us, mind you. Just… made us leave. Said we were disturbing the peace." He spat on the floor. "Silver hair, he had. Like a damn ghost."
Eden’s lips curved into a grim smile. A ghost, indeed. She pressed on, the Bloodhound pulling her onward. The next location was a town, its usual bustle replaced by an unsettling quiet. Buildings bore the marks of recent violence, shutters askew, doors splintered. A few weary-looking villagers huddled in the town square, their faces etched with fear and resignation. When Eden, still in her disguise, inquired about the disarray, an elderly woman, her voice raspy, pointed a trembling finger towards the edge of town. "Bandits," she croaked. "Came out of nowhere. Took everything. Our guards… they just… ran. Said a demon chased them off." She shuddered. "A demon, they said. With eyes like embers."
