Chapter 4
Alone In The Dark: Part I
Two years into his solitary journey, Zero's already bleak view of humanity curdles further.
The dust of two years had settled on Zero’s soul, a fine, gritty layer that obscured any lingering remnants of soft hope. The lands he traversed were a tapestry of human failing, each thread woven with threads of cruelty, selfishness, and a staggering capacity for betrayal. He had seen it all, from the clandestine dealings of slave traffickers to the overt oppression of bandits and corrupt guards. And with each encounter, the image of his father, the Demon Lord, a figure of raw, unadulterated power, seemed less like a monster and more like a product of this very world.
His first encounter with the slavers had been a study in his own evolving morality. He’d stumbled upon their operation deep within a shadowed forest, the air thick with the cries of the captured and the guttural commands of their captors. A familiar rage had simmered beneath his skin, the instinct to unleash the demon within, to tear them limb from limb. But Hope’s training, the whispers of her voice echoing in his mind, had held him back. He had disarmed them, a whirlwind of controlled fury, leaving them bound and sputtering threats. He’d even freed their cargo, the terrified souls who had been on the cusp of a life of unimaginable misery. Yet, as he watched them scatter into the undergrowth, he knew they would regroup, their trade too lucrative to abandon. He had disrupted, but not eradicated. The thought left a bitter taste in his mouth, a testament to his inability to truly change the world, or perhaps, his own growing apathy towards it.
The town of Oakhaven was a different kind of horror. Nestled in a valley, its thatched roofs and stone walls spoke of simple lives, lives that had been systematically leeched dry. Bandits, emboldened by the complicity of the local UNIT detachment, had turned the town into their personal playground. Zero arrived amidst a cacophony of fear and desperation, the cries of the downtrodden reaching him long before he saw the ravaged marketplace.
