Chapter 10
A Kingdom in Ruins
Eden Finally realizes the truth
The journey back to Edenia was a torment. Each hoofbeat of her horse echoed the growing dread in her soul. The once familiar roads, usually bustling with life, were eerily silent, a chilling precursor to the devastation she would soon witness. As the spires of the royal capital came into view, a stark, jagged silhouette against the bruised twilight sky, her heart plummeted. Smoke billowed from within the city walls, not the gentle plumes of hearth fires, but the angry, black tendrils of destruction. The gates, usually a symbol of safety and authority, hung ajar, twisted and broken, like the jaws of a ravaged beast. The air thrummed with the distant cacophony of battle, the clash of steel and the screams of the wounded, a symphony of chaos that tore at her very core.
She urged her horse forward, a desperate, futile attempt to outrun the horror unfolding before her. As she neared the inner courtyard, the scene solidified into a nightmarish tableau. Eden’s blood ran cold. The Moderate faction, long a thorn in the side of the royal house, had seized their opportunity. With her, the kingdom’s most ardent protector, absent, presumed dead, they had orchestrated their coup. Her father, the King, would be within these walls, likely attempting to rally a defense. She had to reach him. She had to fight.
