The hum of the transport was a familiar lullaby, a constant thrum against my bones that had always signified safety, order, and the predictable rhythm of my existence. But tonight, that hum felt like a heartbeat of dread. Anya sat beside me, her usual sharp edges softened by the dim, flickering emergency lights of the service tunnel. The air was thick with the metallic tang of ozone and something else, something acrid and unsettling that clung to the back of my throat. It was a gesture of comfort, but also a silent acknowledgment of the precariousness of our situation. Every vibration of the transport, every distant clank and hiss, felt like a pronouncement of impending discovery.

We had been so close. The forbidden archive, a place whispered about in the hushed corners of the City’s digital undercurrents, had yielded its secrets. Elder Maeve’s cryptic words, laced with the scent of dried herbs and forgotten stories, had been the key. She had spoken of ‘the seams,’ places where the System’s control frayed, where the carefully constructed reality could be… bent.
