The air outside the designated zones tasted different, raw and untamed. It carried the scent of soil, of rain that had fallen on something other than recycled water, of growth that wasn't meticulously cataloged. Kaelen breathed it in, a deep, cleansing draught that filled lungs accustomed to the sterile, filtered atmosphere of the System. The walls of the containment had crumbled, not in a spectacular explosion, but in a quiet, internal surrender, a shedding of the old skin that had felt so constricting for so long.
Anya stood beside Kaelen, her silhouette sharp against the bruised twilight sky. There was a weariness in her posture, a familiar tension that had become a silent language between them. But beneath it, Kaelen sensed a new kind of peace, a settling that came from having fought the good fight, from having seen the impossible made real.
“It’s… vast,” Kaelen breathed, the word barely escaping their lips. Vastness was a concept Kaelen had only encountered in abstract data streams, in simulations designed to illustrate the System’s supposed benevolence in providing structure. Now, it was a tangible, overwhelming presence.
