The roughspun blanket did little to ward off the chill that permeated the small, stone dwelling. Gordon, or rather, the infant who now wore Gordon’s memories, stirred restlessly. His tiny limbs flailed, a stark contrast to the regal bearing he once possessed. Outside, the wind howled a mournful tune, a sound that echoed the emptiness left in his heart by the sudden, brutal end of his former life. He was King Gordon of Rustle, a ruler loved by his people, a man who had strived for peace and prosperity. Now, he was a helpless babe, dependent on the meager offerings of this strange new world.
The memories were a torrent, vivid and sharp, a constant reminder of the blood that had stained his throne room, the surprised gasp that had escaped his lips as the assassin’s blade found its mark. He remembered the chilling void that followed, the disembodied voice of Ruidoso, the god of second chances, offering a reprieve from eternal slumber. A gift, he had called it. A chance to live again, in a world where might was the only law.
He had been reborn into this humble cottage, nestled on the outskirts of a village that seemed to live by the rhythm of the blacksmith’s hammer and the distant clang of training swords. He had learned to crawl, then to walk, his mind a stark contrast to his infant body. He absorbed the rudimentary language, the customs, the unspoken rules of this land. He watched the village children, their small hands already gripping wooden swords, their faces alight with the thrill of imagined battles. He felt a pang of something akin to envy. He, who had once commanded armies, now struggled to balance on unsteady legs.
