Chapter 8
Whispers of the Sword
Gordon encounters Elara, a skilled swordswoman. She offers cryptic advice and a glimpse into the harsh realities of this world's power.
The air in the small cottage, if it could even be called that, was thick with the scent of drying herbs and something else, something earthy and unfamiliar that tickled Gordon’s nascent senses. He lay on a coarse straw mat, the rough fibers a stark contrast to the silken sheets he remembered. His tiny limbs, so alien and clumsy, struggled to find purchase as he shifted. The memories, vivid and sharp, of his past life as King Gordon of Rustle Good, of the cold glint of steel and the searing betrayal, were a constant hum beneath the surface of his awareness. It was a strange duality, this existence: the helplessness of an infant coupled with the vast, complex tapestry of a monarch’s mind.
He’d spent days, or perhaps weeks, in this state of bewildered observation. The woman who tended to him, her hands rough but gentle, spoke in a language he didn’t understand, yet somehow, the meaning seeped into him, a miraculous gift from Ruidoso, the god who had plucked him from the void. He’d absorbed the basic tenets of this world through the divine grace he’d been granted: that power was the currency, and the sword, its most eloquent expression.
Today, however, was different. A subtle shift in the atmosphere, a ripple in the mundane rhythm of his existence, drew his attention. Lyra had left him swaddled in his small crib, a few woven toys scattered around him, and stepped outside, her usual quiet humming ceasing abruptly. Gordon, with a surge of infant curiosity that felt amplified by his adult consciousness, managed to push himself up, his chubby hands gripping the rough wooden bars.
