Chapter 7
The Path Unfolds
Driven by a sense of duty, Gordon decides to leave his quiet home. He prepares for a journey, his past life a silent guide.
The rough-hewn wooden walls of the small cottage offered little solace, yet they had been a sanctuary. For weeks, Gordon had occupied this humble space, a stark contrast to the gilded halls of Rustle. Here, the air was thick with the scent of damp earth and woodsmoke, a primal aroma that spoke of life, raw and untamed. He had awoken to this world a babe, helpless and bewildered, his royal memories a phantom limb, a persistent ache in the quiet chambers of his mind. The god Ruidoso’s gift, a second chance, had been bestowed with an enigmatic smile, a promise of a new beginning in a realm where might truly did make right.
He had spent his infancy and early childhood learning to crawl, to walk, to speak, the simple joys of a new existence a balm to the lingering trauma of his assassination. His adoptive parents, simple folk with calloused hands and kind eyes, had loved him fiercely, a love that transcended the mystery of his sudden appearance. They taught him the language of this world, the names of the stars that blazed in the alien sky, and the basic tenets of survival. But as he grew, so too did the whispers of his past. The innate sense of justice that had defined his reign, the understanding of leadership, the very weight of responsibility that had once rested upon his crowned head, these things refused to be silenced.
He had trained, of course. The rudimentary lessons in swordplay and the nascent understanding of the world’s inherent power had been a necessity, not a choice. He felt the energy thrumming beneath his skin, a power that Ruidoso had promised would grow with understanding and exertion. It was a strange sensation, akin to a slumbering beast awakening within him, eager to be unleashed. He practiced with a wooden sword in the small clearing behind the cottage, the rhythmic clang against imaginary foes a constant, almost mournful, symphony. Each swing was a testament to his resolve, a silent vow to this new world, and to himself.
