The rough-spun blanket did little to ward off the persistent chill that seemed to emanate from the very stones of the small cottage. Gordon, or rather, the infant that now housed the king’s soul, squirmed, a silent protest against the discomfort. His tiny fists clenched and unclenched, a primal instinct that belied the ancient consciousness within. The world, a blurry kaleidoscope of muted colors and indistinct shapes, offered no solace. It was a stark contrast to the vibrant, ordered halls of Rustle, a kingdom he had once ruled with a gentle but firm hand. Here, there was only the damp earth scent of the room, the faint aroma of woodsmoke from outside, and the bewildering sensation of being utterly, profoundly small.

It wasn't the ache of hunger or the discomfort of a soiled garment. It was a resonance, a hum of latent energy stirring. He focused, his infant mind, surprisingly adept at concentration, latching onto the sensation. He recalled, with a clarity that surprised even himself, the words of the god Ruidoso, whispered in the ethereal void: "A world of power and sword... a gift to forge anew."
