The rough-hewn wooden door creaked open, admitting a sliver of the pale morning light that painted the dusty floorboards in hesitant stripes. Gordon, or rather, the small, unfamiliar body he now inhabited, stood on the threshold. The air, crisp and carrying the scent of damp earth and distant pine, was a stark contrast to the stale, perfumed chambers of his former life. He took a breath, a shallow inhale that filled lungs that still felt strangely alien, and stepped out.
Beside him, Elara’s hand rested lightly on the hilt of her sword, a silent reassurance. Her gaze, sharp and assessing, swept over the small, dilapidated cottage that had been their sanctuary for the past few weeks. It was a humble abode, far removed from the gilded halls of Rustle, a kingdom he had once ruled with a heavy but just hand. Now, he was merely a child, a vessel for memories and a destiny he was only beginning to comprehend.
“The road is long, and the world is wide,” Elara said, her voice a low murmur that carried a hint of weariness, yet held an undercurrent of unwavering strength. “We cannot linger here forever, waiting for shadows to creep from the trees.”
