The rough-hewn wood of the cot dug into Gordon’s back, a stark contrast to the silken sheets he vaguely recalled. Sunlight, unfiltered and harsh, streamed through the single, grimy window of the small cottage, painting stripes across the packed dirt floor. He’d felt the rudimentary stirrings of his new body, a clumsy, uncoordinated vessel learning to grasp, to crawl, to eventually stand. But it was the memories, the vivid, searing memories of his past life, that truly defined him. The betrayal, the sharp, final pain of the assassin’s blade, the chilling darkness that had followed – they were etched into his soul. And then, the void. The infinite, silent expanse where Ruidoso’s gentle, resonant voice had offered him a second chance.

“A world of power and sword,” Ruidoso had said, the words echoing in the ethereal emptiness. “A chance to forge a new destiny.” Gordon had accepted, not out of a desperate clinging to life, but out of a profound sense of unfinished business. The injustices he had witnessed, the corruption that had festered beneath Rustle’s gilded surface, the unanswered questions surrounding his own demise – these things gnawed at him.
