University: Where I Tried to Be Someone Else

University. The word itself still conjures up a vague scent of stale coffee, desperation, and the lingering ghost of lectures I barely paid attention to. It was supposed to be the grand unveiling, the place where Raheel Awan, the slightly bewildered child, would transform into Raheel Awan, the polished, purposeful adult. Spoiler alert: the transformation was less caterpillar-to-butterfly and more… caterpillar-to-slightly-more-confused-caterpillar.

The pressure was immense. Suddenly, everyone seemed to have a five-year plan etched into their very DNA. They spoke in hushed tones of internships, graduate programs, and the sacred trinity of career prospects. I, on the other hand, was still trying to figure out how to operate the communal washing machine without accidentally dyeing all my socks a questionable shade of grey. My parents, bless their well-meaning hearts, had high hopes. “Raheel,” my father would say, his voice resonating with the gravitas of a man who’d successfully navigated a lifetime of spreadsheets, “this is your chance to find your calling. Your purpose.” My mother, ever the pragmatist, would add, “And try to make some friends who aren’t just playing video games all day. You know, people with aspirations.”

Aspirations. I think my main aspiration at that point was to survive the week without tripping over my own feet in the crowded quad.
