The turning point. Raheel sheds the pretense of normalcy and begins to champion his quirks. He discovers liberation and humor in his unique perspective, finding purpose in his individuality.
The Inner Critic, bless its perpetually worried little heart, had been having a field day. For weeks, maybe months, it had been a constant, whiny soprano in the back of my mind, a relentless chorus of “Are you *sure* about that, Raheel?” and “Everyone else is doing it *this* way!” It was the voice that had whispered insidious doubts during my brief, ill-fated stint as a junior accountant (the spreadsheets looked like hieroglyphics designed by a committee of grumpy squirrels), and the one that had cackled with glee when my attempt at artisanal sourdough resulted in a brick that could have been used as a doorstop, or perhaps a medieval weapon.
