It’s a funny thing, isn’t it? How much of our lives we spend trying to cram ourselves into boxes that are just… not our shape. For years, I’d been wrestling with that internal wrestling match, the one where my own magnificent oddness was constantly being body-slammed by the Inner Critic. It was like having a tiny, impeccably dressed gremlin whispering in my ear, “Are you *sure* that’s the right shade of beige? Wouldn’t a slightly less enthusiastic shade of beige be more… *appropriate*?” And I, bless my easily-influenced heart, would nod sagely and go buy a more subdued shade of beige.
But chapter 14, with the Quirky Friend (let’s call her Zara, because she’s definitely a Zara), had been a revelation. Zara, bless her mismatched socks and ability to find profound meaning in a perfectly ripe avocado, had a way of making my peculiar brand of chaos seem less like a personal failing and more like a… well, a feature. A delightful, albeit sometimes inconvenient, feature.
“You know, Raheel,” she’d said, swirling a glass of something suspiciously purple, “you spend so much energy trying to be a bland watercolour when you’re clearly a Jackson Pollock.”
