I met Maya during my ill-fated attempt to join a competitive knitting club. Yes, you read that right. In my desperate quest for ‘normalcy’ (Chapter 2, anyone?), I’d convinced myself that mastering the intricate art of yarn manipulation would finally earn me some sort of beige-toned respectability. The club met in a musty community hall that smelled faintly of mothballs and regret. The members, a formidable group of ladies whose needles clicked with the precision of a tiny, wool-based army, eyed me with suspicion. I, in my new, ill-fitting cardigan and a determinedly neutral expression, felt like an imposter at a very exclusive, very woolly party.
