There are certain voices that follow you through life, whispering sweet nothings of inadequacy or, more commonly, rather loud pronouncements of your shortcomings. Mine, I’ve come to realize, is less a whisper and more a full-blown, unsolicited TED Talk delivered by a particularly judgmental pigeon. I call this voice The Inner Critic. It’s not just a thought here and there; it’s a full-blown character, a non-binary entity with a penchant for tweed blazers and a PhD in pointing out every single microscopic flaw I possess.
"Oh, look at you, Raheel," it chirped one Tuesday morning, as I was attempting to butter toast. My buttering technique, it should be noted, is a closely guarded secret involving an almost artistic application of the spread, ensuring even coverage without tearing the bread. A delicate dance, really. "Still can't butter toast without looking like you're wrestling a badger. Pathetic."
I paused, the knife hovering over the golden-brown canvas. "It's a process," I mumbled, because arguing with The Inner Critic is like trying to reason with a particularly stubborn garden gnome – ultimately futile and likely to result in bruised feelings.
