The air in the old library, usually thick with the comforting scent of aged paper and lemon polish, now felt heavy, charged with an unspoken tension. Eleanor clutched the worn leather journal, its pages a map of her father’s hidden life, a life that now threatened to consume her own. The late afternoon sun, once a friendly visitor, now cast long, distorted shadows across the room, each one seeming to twist and writhe with unseen threats. Beatrice Sterling sat across from her, a picture of serene composure, her teacup poised elegantly between manicured fingers. Yet, Eleanor saw past the facade, the subtle tremor in Beatrice’s hand, the way her gaze flickered away when Eleanor’s own met hers.

“You’ve been quiet, Eleanor,” Beatrice said, her voice a silken caress that did little to soothe the knot of unease in Eleanor’s stomach. “Is something troubling you?”

Eleanor’s gaze drifted to the journal, its spine a dark, silent testament to a truth deliberately buried. “I found something, Aunt Beatrice. In the attic. Something Father left behind.”
