She fanned herself with a tattered flyer, her eyes scanning the dusty street for any sign of a customer. It had been a slow morning, the kind that gnawed at her resolve, whispering doubts into the quiet spaces of her mind. Her dream of a thriving tailoring business, one that would bring jobs and a sense of pride back to her township, felt impossibly distant on days like these. She smoothed down a vibrant piece of fabric, a bold shweshwe print that spoke of joy and possibility, but today it seemed to mock her dwindling hope.

“Another slow one, my child?” Mama Themba’s voice, raspy with age and the ever-present dust, drifted from her own stall across the way, laden with colourful beaded necklaces and bracelets.

Thandiwe offered a weak smile. “It’s the way of things, Mama. We pray for a good afternoon.”
