She traced the condensation with a fingertip, a thin, ephemeral line mirroring the precariousness of her current existence. Chapter fifteen had ended with a chilling whisper from the System, a hint so vague yet so potent it had burrowed under her skin like a parasite. "The Architect watches," it had said, a cryptic pronouncement that felt less like a warning and more like a judgment.
Her contact, a man named Silas, was late. Silas, with his perpetually amused eyes and his uncanny ability to procure anything from untraceable weapons to untraceable alibis. Silas, who had been her anchor in the murky underworld, her one constant in a life defined by fleeting alliances and deadly precision. Tonight, however, the usual comfort of his presence was overshadowed by a gnawing unease. The System’s words echoed in the silence, each syllable a hammer blow against her carefully constructed composure.
The door creaked open, admitting a gust of damp air and the hunched figure of Silas. He shook his head, spraying droplets of water like a disgruntled terrier. “Nasty night,” he grumbled, shedding his coat. His usual jovial demeanor seemed muted, his eyes lacking their customary sparkle.
