The air in the opulent ballroom was thick with the cloying scent of expensive perfume and the murmur of hushed conversations. Each step was a calculated grace, her eyes scanning, assessing, cataloging. The Level Up Sexy Lady System hummed beneath her skin, a familiar thrum of anticipation, a promise of the next trial, the next surge of power.
Her current target was a man named Silas Thorne. He was a collector of rare artifacts, a patron of the arts, and, according to the System’s intel, a man who dealt in secrets as readily as he dealt in antiquities. He was also, the System had added with a suggestive flourish, a man who appreciated… finesse. Anya had learned by now that the System’s descriptors were rarely innocent.
Thorne was as advertised: tall, with a sharp, intelligent face framed by silver-streaked dark hair. His eyes, the colour of aged amber, held a knowing glint, and his smile was a slow, predatory curve that promised both pleasure and peril. He was currently engaged in conversation with a cluster of influential figures, his voice a low, resonant baritone that carried even over the din. Anya felt a familiar prickle of excitement. This was not a brute to be subdued, nor a fool to be easily manipulated. This was a dance.
