Chapter 10
Moral Crossroads
Anya starts to question the System's true intentions and the cost of her power. The thrill wanes, replaced by a growing unease about the path she's walking and the humanity she might be losing.
The sterile gleam of the chrome-plated scalpel felt alien in Anya’s hand. It wasn't the cold, precise instrument of her trade, but a tool of a different kind, one that had become intimately familiar. The memory of the last target, a smug diplomat with secrets buried deeper than his offshore accounts, still lingered, not in the satisfying thrum of a successful kill, but in the lingering scent of expensive cologne and the faint echo of a whispered confession. The System had awarded her a new defensive maneuver, a blinding flash of light that could disorient an attacker, but the prize felt hollow.

It had been a whisper, a phantom in the dark corners of her mind, promising escape from the gnawing boredom, from the predictable rhythm of life and death. It had delivered, in a way. Her agility was now a blur, her senses sharper than any predator’s. But the price… the price was becoming a heavy burden.
The mission briefing for the current contract flickered on her datapad, a stark contrast to the swirling thoughts in her head. A mid-level corporate executive, suspected of industrial espionage. The reward was substantial, enough to fund her next few months of… what? More challenges? More leveling up? The words felt like ashes in her mouth.
