The air in the maze grew thick and heavy, pressing in on Elara like an invisible cloak. She clutched the Compass of Truth, its cool metal a comforting weight in her trembling hand. Before her, a chasm yawned, a dizzying drop into an echoing darkness. Spanning the abyss was what looked like a bridge, its planks a sturdy, familiar wood. Her heart gave a hopeful leap. This was it, surely. The way forward.

She took a tentative step, her worn boot landing on the first plank. It held. A small sigh of relief escaped her lips. She took another step, and then another. The bridge seemed to stretch out before her, a solid pathway leading to the other side. But as she neared the middle, a shiver traced its way down her spine. Elara stopped, her breath catching in her throat. She looked down at the bridge, then back at the compass. The wood beneath her feet suddenly seemed… less real. The grain appeared to shimmer, the edges blurring as if viewed through rippling water. She willed herself to believe it was solid, to push past the nagging doubt, but the compass’s hum was a relentless siren song of warning.
