The old oak, a sentinel of emerald shade, stood precisely where it had always stood, its gnarled branches reaching like benevolent arms towards the heavens. It was here, beneath its dappled canopy, that I had first truly seen her, a vision rendered in sunlight and soft linen, a dewdrop caught on a spider’s silken thread. Now, it was to be our meeting place, a sanctuary whispered into existence by a trembling hand, a desperate plea etched onto paper, and a heart that dared to believe in the impossible.

My steps were hesitant, each one a small rebellion against the gnawing doubt that coiled within me. The air, thick with the perfume of late summer roses and the unseen hum of insects, felt charged, expectant. It was as if the very earth held its breath, awaiting the culmination of all those solitary hours spent pouring my soul onto parchment, all those stolen glances and silent prayers. I clutched the worn volume of verses in my satchel, a foolish talisman, and tried to recall the precise cadence of her reply, the way her voice, usually so measured, had held a tremor of something new, something akin to my own burgeoning hope.

“At the oak,” she had written, her script a delicate dance of ink, “when the shadows grow long.” And so, I had come, a poet adrift on a sea of anticipation, the salt spray of anxiety stinging my eyes.
