The wind, a constant companion in this new land, carried with it a different scent today – not the familiar, earthy perfume of the plains, but something acrid, tinged with smoke and fear. Areptor, perched on a high ridge overlooking the valley, felt a prickle of unease crawl up her spine. The sun, usually a benevolent eye in the sky, seemed to cast longer, more sinister shadows that day, stretching and distorting the familiar landscape into something alien and menacing.
